A SPACESHIP is any vehicle designed to travel unaided outside of a planetary environment. In the Expansion Period and early Fencepost Period, the term "space craft" or "space vessel" was preferred. "Boat" came into more common use throughout the Fencepost Period and by the end of the Fencepost Period, the descriptive "space" was considered archaic. Throughout most of the War Period, the term "vehicle" was used to cover most planetary and extra-planetary vessels with indicating the specific types and classes of craft usually preferred over classifying them as a group. Synonyms most commonly used today are: vehicle, boat, craft, ship, skyship, skyvessel, skycraft, space craft, caelorum, celorum, blackcraft, x-plane, upship, upper, extra.
